By engaging in creative activities from an early age, children learn valuable skills such as lateral thinking, problem solving, managing ambiguity and uncertainty, and how to generate and evaluate original ideas.
These are all skills that will support them throughout school and will be in high demand as they transition into their adult careers - they can’t easily be replicated by AI!
The Fashion Rebellion programme behind Eco Stitch Club has been designed with many years of experience of teaching children useful, creative skills in a fun and accessible way. By making things they will enjoy using and wearing, they will develop confidence, independence, coordination, focus and an appreciation of what goes into making something.
The Eco-Stitch Club usually runs over a term. During this time pupils learn sewing machine fundamentals and techniques, taught through fun and easy upcycling projects.
Every new project adds a new skillset to work towards independence and increase knowledge of the remake or repair of clothing.
The course can be tailored based on the time available at each school, but we always cover the basics:
Machine function and speed controls
Threading up
First simple upcycled project
Problem solving and machine care
"The course is really good, the things we make are useful and creative. It's clear and easy to follow."
Phoebe, age 12
"I am always coveting the creations my daughter brings home with her and wish the classes had been running when I was a 13 year old girl."
Annie, parent
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to learn at their own pace, developing important concentration and problem solving skills while having fun.
Of course the Club Leaders are there to help anyone who is really stuck!
Because there is no pressure to keep up with others in the class, pupils can enjoy the learning process, have fun and build confidence in their own abilities.
